- Happiness-is it truly happiness? If they are really happy is it okay that the way they become happy is artificial (soma)?
- Bernard-there are so many aspects about Bernard that are intriguing yet confusing. I still need to learn more about this character but I know I want to include him in my writing.
- Grand narrative-what does the society really believe? How is there Ford when this is supposed to be postmodern?
- Savages-why such a stark contrast? What are they trying to say about our culture? The BNW society?
- People-have no value. They're being engineered and altered to create the "perfect" world. Something wrong with this picture? Where are the morals?
So, these are some of the main ideas that I have been thinking about while reading BNW. I don't know which I'm going to choose for my essay but for now I'm mostly thinking of combining the happiness and people one. I think that my thesis would be something like, 'In Huxley's Brave New World people are happy all the time, but they're genetically engineered this way; is this humane or even happiness for that matter?'
The other texts that I would use would definitely be Postmodernism, other people's blogs, and I'm not sure about the other source. I'm sure I'll find one.
I'm sorry this blog is so boring! Haha.
Hello!
ReplyDeleteI must say that I am just as, if not more, unsure about a thesis as you are. I really liked all of the ideas that you came up with. You have some really strong points and I think that you could have a super great essay.
I had a similar idea about the happiness thing.
I also really liked the points you brought up about Bernard and the savages. Your questions really show that youy are trying to dig deeper into the emaning of the book. I think that this is so fantastic!
Your idea for a thesis is a great start. I think that you could have a lot to talk about and prove your point.
Also, your ideas for other texts to use are great! Definately Postmodernism and blogs! Maybe a real world source like the news or an article that someone wrote would make it super cool too.
Well, I guess that's all. Sorry that my comment was dumb. Still, good ideas all around.
Uh....
ReplyDeleteSo I pretty much like your ideas for this upcoming essay. The only one I would advise you to toss out is the happiness one. It's a good idea and would lend itself to a good essay, but I'm sure you want to delve into a different facet of the novel too. :)
I think that the topic I like best is the one about the Savages. I definitely think that this could lend itself to a stellar essay. It would be interesting to turn the tables on the BNW society and ask: are they the true savages? As much as their society is perfectly organized and manufactured, they have no bonds of family, dignity, and love. Kinda savage-like, in my opinion.
So yeah, I hope you enjoyed my comment (although it was lame) and I hope it helps your essay!!
Comment time!!
ReplyDeleteOk, I'm totally in the same boat with not being able to pick or define a topic until the book is finished... and not even then :)
You had some good ideas. I think the savages idea is the most unique so you might want to work on that one a little deeper.
Comment on Kathryn's Comment: Oooooooo good idea with the savages not being savages and the civilized people not being civilized!
Back to you: I hadn't though about using other people's blogs as a source... I don't know if that's a good idea or not. Something I'll definitely think about though!
